Bryan Light 1959-1960
First annual yearbook produced by the Class of 1960
Bryan Memorial Hospital at 48th and Sumner Streets in Lincoln has been ministering to the sick and injured citizens of the capital city and to those from many other areas of the state since June 6, 1926. It opened on that date as a 50 bed hospital and the original cost of the building was $150,000.
William Jennings Bryan, a Nebraskan historically familiar to the nation and known as the "Great Commoner" gave his home Fairview and 10 acres of land to the Methodist conference in 1922. With this gift the Methodists' dream of building a hospital in Lincoln started taking form and 4 years later, became a reality.
Fairview has been used as a home for the student nurses. Another dormitory was built in 1945 on an adjoining 5 acres of land given to the Methodists by Mr. and Mrs. T.S. Allen. Mrs. Allen, who still resides in Lincoln is the sister of W.J. Bryan.
The hospital was expanded in 1930 by the construction of the front hospital section and again in 1948 when the west wing was added. A new $100,000 laboratory, modern in every respect was constructed in 1958.
Bryan Hospital had a record breaking 93% occupancy of its 125 beds in 1958. Nearly 200 patients were turned away for lack of facilities. Likewise enrollment in the School of Nursing is curtailed due to lack of space and class rooms. A maximum of 70 students are now enrolled. Since 1952 the Board of Trustees have been studying the hospital's urgent needs for a larger school of nursing, more patient beds, and improved facilities required to keep pace with the great advances made in the medical field. The intensive study results in the launching of a $2,800,000 building and expansion program. This provides for the construction of a new School of Nursing for 100-110 students, a new 5 story east wing plus 2 floors added to the present hospital building, increases capacity from 125 to 200 beds, and a wide scale renovation, relocation and modernization of the existing plant. The method of financing is with Hill-Burton Funds in the amount of $1,080,000, a mortgage loan for $900,000, assets and subscriptions on hand totaling $320,000 and the balance of $100,000 through a fund-raising campaign.
When completed Bryan Memorial Hospital will have a plant evaluated at $2,300,000 and will be prepared to offer only the very best in hospital service to the people of Lincoln and Nebraska.

Foreword:
As a symbol to the Spirit of Nursing,
As a record of lasting friendship,
And hours of joy and toil,
And as a service to our Hospital,
Whose future shall uphold the tradition of its past,
If these things are embodied in the pages of this book, then
Our purpose has been accomplished.
